Billingham Town Council asked me if I would be able to attend the Opening Ceremony for the new Park Pantry yesterday.
Local businesses and local residents donate unwanted items, mainly foodstuffs, and those in need can come along every Monday between 11 am and 2 pm and for just £2, purchase any10 items. The goods on offer depend on what is donated but include tinned goods and dried foods like rice and pasta.
People also donate fresh fruit and vegetables which are given out free of charge.
In addition, there are a range of other items like toiletries and cleaning materials that are sold at very low prices.
I work for the Billingham Environmental Link Programme and they kindly allowed me to go along during work time. I went along with one of our Directors who donated a big tray of vegetables that had been freshly harvested from our Community Garden in Port Clarence. We will be donating every Monday as long as we have stock.
My boss kindly made a video of the proceedings.
